🤖 Google I/O 2026: What Google Will Probably Announce Tonight
Google is kicking off its biggest developer conference of the year tonight — Google I/O 2026. And if the past few weeks revealed anything, it’s that this year’s event will be almost entirely focused on artificial intelligence.
Google is no longer just a search engine company. The company is trying to rebuild Android, the web, office apps, and even hardware around Gemini AI. This year’s I/O should show how far Google has managed to push that vision.
The keynote starts today at 10:00 AM PT.
Gemini Everywhere
The biggest topic of the entire conference will undoubtedly be Gemini.
Google is steadily integrating Gemini into:
- Android,
- Gmail,
- Docs,
- Chrome,
- Android Auto,
- Search,
- and its voice assistant.
Based on leaks and early announcements, Google appears ready to focus heavily on so-called “agentic AI” this year — systems that do more than answer questions and can actually perform tasks across apps on behalf of the user.
In practice:
- booking reservations,
- planning schedules,
- replying to emails,
- working with documents,
- or understanding what is currently displayed on the screen.
Google also needs to prove that it can still compete with OpenAI and Microsoft in the AI race. Google I/O has traditionally been where the company presents its long-term strategy.
Android 17
An official introduction of Android 17 is also expected.
Google already previewed part of the update during Android Show, so this year probably won’t be about a dramatic visual redesign. The focus will likely be on:
- AI features,
- security,
- scam protection,
- and deeper Gemini integration.
Rumors mention:
- smarter voice controls,
- AI-powered notification management,
- improved on-device search,
- and features that understand screen content in real time.
Android XR and Smart Glasses
Another major topic could be Android XR.
Google is once again returning to smart glasses and augmented reality after years away from the space. This time, however, the company has significantly more advanced AI technology available.
The combination of:
- voice interaction,
- live translation,
- image recognition,
- and an AI assistant
makes these devices far more practical than the original Google Glass era.
According to current reports, Google may reveal:
- a new XR platform,
- developer tools,
- partnerships with Samsung,
- and possibly even early hardware prototypes.
AI-Powered Search
Google Search itself is expected to receive major attention as well.
The company is gradually transforming traditional search into AI-generated answers instead of classic lists of links. While this may be more convenient for users, it also changes the economics of the web.
For publishers and websites, the shift could mean:
- fewer clicks,
- less traffic,
- and greater dependence on Google’s AI summaries.
This is likely where Google will introduce further updates to AI Overviews and generative search features.
What I’ll Be Watching Most Closely
The most important question about this year’s Google I/O may not be what Google announces — but how much of it will actually be useful in practice.
In recent years, Google has shown highly ambitious AI demos that later arrived:
- delayed,
- limited,
- or sometimes not at all.
That’s why tonight’s keynote will be especially interesting: will Google present genuinely useful AI tools and real products, or mostly another polished vision of the future?
After the keynote, I’ll also publish a full recap covering the biggest announcements and surprises from Google I/O 2026.
